The Clarion Call of Self-Respect: When Radhika Rejected the CO’s 'Proposal'

​In the previous post, you saw how Radhika, driven by loneliness and innocence, fell into her aunt's (Mausi) trap and reached an unknown, dangerous place. She had no money and no phone, but the ache of isolation had drawn her there.

​The Unknown Destination: The CO's Office

​Mausi had said she was going to her daughter's place, but they ended up at a large convent-style office complex. It was a massive building with nearly 200 rooms, meant for municipal employees. Fortunately, the CO (Chief Officer) wasn't there that night, and they stayed in his suite. Radhika noticed how easily Mausi got the keys, suggesting she was a frequent visitor.

​In the morning, a CO in his late 50s arrived. Mausi had insisted Radhika "dress up well."

​An Insulting Proposal

​After a silent breakfast, they returned to the room. The CO began questioning Radhika about her age (28) and her government factory job (Salary: ₹2500). Then came the blunt proposal:

​"I want to keep you with me. I will give you money and a house, but I will not give you my name (as a wife)."

​Radhika’s Dignity

​For Radhika, who had left her home specifically to save her honor, this was unbearable. She looked him in the eye and replied with immense confidence:

​"I have no intention of going anywhere else. But as for your proposal—I would rather marry a rickshaw puller than even think about your conditions! Sir, if you had offered to make me your life partner, your legal wife, and given me your name and respect, I might have thought about it. But you want to make me your mistress! That is impossible."

​She added, "I am a woman of self-respect. I can earn my own living. My hands and feet aren't rusted. I'd rather die than live such a life."

​The Final Battle for Escape

​Radhika walked out. Mausi stayed back, clearly wanting Radhika to stay. Realizing Mausi wouldn't budge, Radhika boldly barged into the CO’s ongoing meeting. She demanded to be released.

​The CO came out and said, "I am not stopping you, you may go." During their talk, he had called her 'advanced,' to which she retorted: "If I weren't 'advanced,' sir, people like you would have swallowed me whole by now."

​Finally, the CO instructed Mausi to take her away, likely paying her off. They left, but they were still 100 kilometers away from safety. Radhika sensed that Mausi wasn't done yet and would try to trap her again.

​पिछली पोस्ट में आपने देखा कि राधिका अपने भोलेपन और अकेलेपन के कारण मौसी के झांसे में आकर एक अंजान और खतरनाक जगह पर पहुँच गई। उसके पास न पैसा था, न मोबाइल, पर अकेलेपन का दर्द उसे खींच लाया था।

​🏠 अंजान ठिकाना: सीओ का ऑफिस

​मौसी ने कहा था कि वह अपनी बेटी के यहाँ जा रही है, लेकिन वह एक बड़े कॉन्वेंट टाइप के ऑफिस में गई। यह एक ऐसी इमारत थी जहाँ लगभग 200 के लगभग रूम रहे होंगे, जो नगरपालिका के कर्मचारियों के लिए था। राधिका की किस्मत अच्छी थी कि जिस रात वे पहुँचे, वहाँ का सीओ (CO) मौजूद नहीं था, और वे उसी के कमरे में रुके।

​राधिका को लगा कि मौसी वहाँ हमेशा जाती रही होगी, तभी तो उन्हें चाबी इतनी आसानी से मिल गई।

​रात में खाना खाकर राधिका सो गई। सुबह जब अधिकारी (सीओ) आए, जिनकी उम्र लगभग 50 के करीब थी, तब तक राधिका नहा-धोकर तैयार हो चुकी थी, क्योंकि मौसी ने उसे 'अच्छे से तैयार हो जाना' कहा था।

​💰 अपमानजनक प्रस्ताव

​सीओ के आने के बाद, वे सब साथ में खाना खाने गए। राधिका ने एक बार मौसी से पूछा भी था कि वह अपनी बेटी के यहाँ क्यों नहीं गई, पर मौसी ने कोई बहाना बना दिया। जब तक वे खाना खा रहे थे, तब तक कोई बात नहीं हुई।

​जैसे ही राधिका रूम में गई, सीओ और मौसी भी पीछे-पीछे आए। सीओ ने राधिका से पूछा:

• ​"क्या नाम है?" - "राधिका"
• ​"कितनी उम्र है?" - "28 साल"
• ​"क्या करती हो?" - "एक सरकारी उद्योग कंपनी में काम करती हूँ।"
• ​"कितनी तनख्वाह मिलती है?" - "ढाई हजार"

​फिर असली बात शुरू हुई:

​सीओ ने सीधे कहा, "मैं तुम्हें अपने साथ रखना चाहता हूँ। मैं तुम्हें गाली दूँगा, पैसा दूँगा, मकान दूँगा, पर तुमको मैं अपना नाम नहीं दूँगा।"

​👑 राधिका का स्वाभिमान

​यह अपमानजनक शर्त राधिका के लिए, जिसने मान-सम्मान बचाने के लिए घर छोड़ा था, असहनीय थी। राधिका ने आत्मविश्वास के साथ सीओ को जवाब दिया:

​"मेरा ऐसा कोई विचार नहीं है कि मैं किसी दूसरी जगह जाऊँ। लेकिन आपने जो कहा, मैं उसका जवाब देती हूँ—मैं एक रिक्शा चलाने वाले के साथ शादी कर लूँगी, लेकिन आपकी जैसी शर्तों के लिए तुम्हें सोचूँगी भी नहीं!"

​"साहब, अगर आप मुझे अपना जीवन साथी बनाना चाहते, अपनी धर्मपत्नी बनाते, अपना नाम देते, मान सम्मान देते, तो मैं एक बार सोचती। लेकिन आप मुझे अपनी रखैल बनाना चाहते हो! यह मुमकिन नहीं है, साहब।"

​"मैं एक खुद्दार लड़की हूँ, खुद कमा कर खा सकती हूँ। मेरे हाथ-पैर में जंग नहीं लगा है। ऐसी ज़िंदगी से अच्छा तो मैं मर जाना बेहतर समझती हूँ।"

​🏃‍♀️ आज़ादी के लिए अंतिम लड़ाई

​इतना कहकर, राधिका कमरे से बाहर निकल गई। मौसी और सीओ के बीच क्या बात हुई, उसे नहीं पता। सीओ अपनी मीटिंग में चला गया, लेकिन मौसी की पूरी इच्छा थी कि राधिका वहीं रुक जाए।

​राधिका समझ चुकी थी कि मौसी उसे क्यों यहाँ लाई है। मौसी टस से मस नहीं हुई। जब राधिका को समझ में आ गया कि अब उसकी दाल नहीं गलेगी, तब जहाँ सीओ की मीटिंग चल रही थी, राधिका वहीं पहुँच गई।

​सामने से किसी ने उसे रोका, पर राधिका ने कहा: "मुझे सीओ साहब से मिलना है, और अभी मिलना है।"

• ​ख़बर पहुँचने पर सीओ 5 मिनट बाद आया।
• ​राधिका ने उनसे पूछा, "जब मेरा आपसे कोई लेना-देना नहीं है, तो आप मुझे जाने क्यों नहीं देते?"
• ​सीओ ने कहा, "मैंने तुम्हें नहीं रोका, तुम जाओ।" (उस बातचीत में, सीओ ने राधिका को 'एडवांस' कहा था, जिसका जवाब राधिका ने दिया था: "अगर मैं एडवांस नहीं होगी, ना साहब, तो आप जैसे पता नहीं कितने हमें खा जाएँगे कच्चा।")
• ​राधिका ने कहा, "मौसी तो नहीं जा रही। आप चलकर मौसी को बोलो कि मुझे यहाँ से लेकर जाए।"

​तब सीओ जाकर मौसी को बोला। मौसी को शायद पैसे दिए होंगे, तब जाकर वह वहाँ से निकली।

​🛣️ नया जाल

​यहाँ से तो राधिका जैसे-तैसे निकल गई, लेकिन 100 किलोमीटर और आ गए वापस। राधिका को अब भी लगा कि मौसी की नीयत उसे कहीं न कहीं ठिकाना लगाने की थी, क्योंकि ऐसा मौका उसको दोबारा तो मिलता नहीं।

​क्या मौसी राधिका को दूसरा शिकार बनाने में कामयाब होगी? या राधिका अपनी खुद्दारी से इस नए शहर से आज़ाद हो जाएगी?
