Chapter 5: The First Paycheck and the Bitter Taste of Betrayal

​In the previous post, you saw how Radhika left her home at 4 AM to protect her dignity, moved to the city, and started a job in a government factory for ₹750 a month.

​When the first paycheck arrived, Radhika felt more of a burden of responsibility than joy. Without any complaints, she began covering the family expenses that fell upon her.

​But Radhika’s goal wasn't just to survive; it was to become self-reliant. Her dream was to buy a sewing machine so she could bring her children back to her as soon as possible and live with dignity.

​The Dream of a Sewing Machine and the Ultimate Betrayal

​Radhika saved her ₹750 salary for 3–4 months. Along with this, she decided to retrieve the ₹2500 to ₹3000 she had hidden in a "Gulak" (piggy bank) at a neighbor's house back in the village—money she had saved in secret out of fear of her alcoholic husband. Combining both amounts, she could finally afford the sewing machine.

​During this time, her younger brother-in-law passed away in an accident. Radhika had to visit the village. Secretly, without letting anyone know, she took her piggy bank and brought it back.

​When Radhika broke the piggy bank with eyes full of hope, the earth slipped from beneath her feet! It was empty. There was nothing inside except a torn ₹50 note.

​She immediately called the woman and asked why she had taken the money. The woman’s reply was a blow even bigger than betrayal. She lied shamelessly, saying, "Insects must have eaten the money."

​Radhika’s heart shattered. She knew how hard she had worked for every rupee in that jar. If the woman needed money, she could have asked, but why steal? In a single moment, all of Radhika’s dreams and her entire life's savings were looted.

​She couldn't eat for three days; she just kept crying. This shock was deeper than her husband’s beatings because it was a war on her trust. Radhika finally realized that she had no one to lean on in this world.

​Just as she took her first step toward freedom, fate dealt her the cruelest blow.

​पहली पेमेंट आते ही राधिका के मन में खुशी कम, और नई जिम्मेदारी का बोझ ज़्यादा आया। बिना किसी शिकायत के उसने अपने ऊपर आए परिवार के खर्चों को निभाना शुरू कर दिया।

​पर राधिका का लक्ष्य सिर्फ गुज़ारा करना नहीं था, बल्कि आत्मनिर्भर बनना था। उसका सपना था एक सिलाई मशीन खरीदना, ताकि वह जल्दी से अपने बच्चों को अपने पास ला सके और सम्मान से जी सके।

​सिलाई मशीन का सपना और विश्वासघात

​राधिका ने अपनी ₹750 की पेमेंट को 3-4 महीने तक बचाकर रखा था। इसके साथ ही, उसने गाँव में रहते हुए शराबी पति के डर से जो ₹2500 से ₹3000 एक महिला के घर गुल्लक में छुपाकर रखे थे, उन्हें भी लाने का फ़ैसला किया। दोनों पैसे मिलाकर, वह सिलाई मशीन खरीद सकती थी।

​इसी बीच, उसके छोटे देवर की एक्सीडेंट में मौत हो गई। राधिका को गाँव जाना पड़ा। वह चुपचाप, सबको पता लगे बिना, महिला के घर से गुल्लक उठाकर अपने बैग में रखकर ले आई। उसका ससुराल जहाँ वह रहती थी, वहाँ से लगभग 25-30 किमी दूर था।

​जब राधिका ने उम्मीद से भरी आँखें लिए गुल्लक तोड़ी, तो उसके पैरों के नीचे से ज़मीन निकल गई! अंदर कुछ भी नहीं था! सिर्फ़ एक फटा हुआ ₹50 का नोट था।

​उसने तुरंत महिला को फ़ोन लगाया और पूछा कि उसने पैसे क्यों निकाल लिए।

​महिला का जवाब राधिका के लिए विश्वासघात से भी बड़ा वार था। उसने झूठ बोलते हुए कहा, "कीड़ा खा गया होगा पैसों को।"

​राधिका का दिल टूट गया। वह जानती थी कि उसने कितनी मेहनत की है, कितने पैसे उस गुल्लक में डाले थे। वह औरत चाहती तो उससे पैसे मांग लेती, पर चोरी क्यों की? राधिका के सारे सपने, उसकी सारी बचत, एक ही झटके में लूट गई थी।

​वह 3 दिन तक खाना नहीं पाई, रोती रही, रोती रही। यह सदमा पति की मार से भी ज़्यादा गहरा था, क्योंकि यह विश्वास पर किया गया वार था। अब राधिका को समझ आ गया था कि इस दुनिया में उसका कोई सहारा नहीं है।

​आज़ादी का पहला कदम उठाते ही, किस्मत ने राधिका को सबसे बड़ी चोट दी थी।

​आगे क्या हुआ? क्या राधिका ने हार मान ली? उस अकेली रात में, जब उसके पास पैसे नहीं थे, कोई सहारा नहीं था, तब राधिका ने ज़िंदा रहने के लिए और बच्चों के लिए कौन-सा कठिन फ़ैसला लिया?
